History of Nathrop, Colorado
Founded in 1879 by German immigrant Charles Nachtrieb, Nathrop is one of the oldest communities in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley. Its iconic views of Mt. Antero, Mt. Princeton, and the Chalk Cliffs certainly stick in your memory. The north section of Nathrop can be seen when you drive through Trout Creek Pass and drop down into the Arkansas River Valley.
Nathrop was a critical juncture in the Denver South Park & Pacific Railroad line, eventually hosting a stagecoach stop, Nachtrieb’s elegant hotel, saloons, stores, and even a weekly newspaper known as “The Press.” It was also home to the area’s first grist mill that supplied citizens with flour and grains.
Living in Nathrop connects you to the Wild West history of Colorado. Charles Nachtrieb was an unfortunate victim of the Lake County Wars when he was shot in the back and killed by an unknown assailant. His wife and family continued to invest in the town after his death in 1881.
